ISHPEMING — The mating season has moose roaming far and wide in the Upper Peninsula- even into the middle of Ishpeming. A moose reportedly crossed through several yards overnight on High Street near Phelps Middle School, including Mary D’s and Rocco C’s backyards. “It just went right through my backyard and the footprints go into my neighbor’s yard,” Mary said. “The tracks are big. It looks like he went over to Rocco’s yard and got turned around, and finally jumped over the fence in my backyard.” Mary, 78, an avid angler and outdoorswoman, said she’ll enjoy having another story for her collection. “Who ever thought a moose would go through our yards?” Mary said. The moose rutting season begins in lare September and will continue through October. The moose attract many sight seers, but people should be cautious about crowding the animals, said John Hendrickson, regional DNR wildlife biologist. “They can get ornery at any time. They are likely to go right through you instead of away from you.”

MARQUETTE — St. Mary’s Hospital’s expansion program in the fields of psychiatric nursing and care of the aged has received the support of the board of directors of the Upper Peninsula Adult Mental Health Clinic, Inc. George P. Mancuso, St. Mary’s associate administrator, explained the expansion program to the Adult Mental Health Clinic directors at their semi-annual meeting at the Northern Michigan College Student Center yesterday afternoon. Expansion involves a double program, including a $1,400,000 addition which will more than double the present hospital’s capacity and facilities and a $300,000 psychiatric treatment center designed to accommodate 16 patients. The psychiatric treatment center will be an expansion of facilities now in existence at St. Mary’s, where six to eight beds normally are occupied by persons receiving treatment. The unit will include eight double patient rooms, a nurses’ station, occupational therapy and recreational rooms, a special section for disturbed patients and a dining-lounge unit.
