MARQUETTE — The Marquette County Historical Society will dedicate a new historical marker honoring Lewis Henry Morgan in ceremonies Oct. 8.
Morgan was a lawyer, anthropologist, biologist and industrialist who came to Marquette Range in 1855, according to Joseph Bertucci, the society’s executive director.
The public dedication will take place at 4 p.m. Oct. 8 near Morgan Creek, west of Morgan Heights. Morgan first came here to assist the Ely family with their plan to develop the first railroad.
While here, he engaged in notable studies of the American beaver, resulting in his classic book, “The American Beaver,” published in 1868.
In July, 1863, he organized the Morgan Iron Company as its president. Production started in December and was very successful, paying a dividend of 100 percent in its second year. It closed in 1876 but the furnace still stands near Morgan Pond.

ISHPEMING — Ishpeming mayor Jimmie Jenkin today proclaimed the period from Oct. 7 to Oct. 13 as Michigan Nurse Week. “We are proud of our nurses who uphold the highest standards of their profession,” he declared. “Our nurses serve willingly and give generously of their time and talents to the care and well-being of the people in this community.” The nursing profession is dedicated to the principal of service to all mankind, he noted. It is a humane profession devoted to kindness, sympathy, and untiring care for those who suffer. Nurses must be well educated and highly skilled in their duties. The reward for their services is not a monetary one, nor one of an easy was of life, rather it is the satisfaction they receive from helping others. Mayor Jenkin urges recognition of the work of the nurse in times of peace and their services to country in times of war.
