MARQUETTE – City residents are being offered a chance to pat their neighbors on the back for making improvements to their property. The city of Marquette has developed a Home Improvement Award to show appreciation to homeowners, renters, and business owners who have worked to improve their properties aesthetically. Nominations will be judged by a committee of local professionals in home industry-related fields. Three categories will be considered–residential properties in which the owner lives, residential properties that are rented, and commercial properties. Winners will receive a certificate and plaque fit for mounting. Another plaque will be on display at City Hall. Applications for nominations are available in the city manager’s office at City Hall. Though not mandatory, before and after photos will help the judging process. The deadline for submitting nominations is Sept. 15. Winners will be announced by Sept. 30.

MARQUETTE – The Marquette Chamber of Commerce has received several calls reporting transient house-to-house salesman soliciting for health-and-accident insurance policies in this area, Ben E. Knauss, secretary-manager of the chamber, reported today. “While the chamber cannot advice on whether these salesmen are legitimate and represent reliable firms unless we are informed of their names and the company or companies they represent, we cannot approve of them making statements that they represent local insurance agencies,” Knauss stated. Reports received regarding one group soliciting in this area indicate salesmen have stated they are connected with local insurance agencies, and according to chamber officials, a check with those agencies mentioned proved the statements to be false. “Your chamber is anxious to receive more facts on this issue from people contacted,” he stated, adding that advice from the chamber be sought by persons interested in buying, before purchases are made.
