ISHPEMING — The Ishpeming School District and the W.C. Peterson Auditorium Advisory Board will pay public recognition to Gordon Elson for his contribution to the auditorium. Elson, of Ishpeming, donated $3,500 to the W.C. Peterson Auditorium, making possible the purchase of a new spotlight. His gift represents the largest personal contribution to the facility since the restoration of the high school auditorium began in 1988. The gift also raises the donation total for the restoration to more than $180,000, which has provided for the complete restoration of the 1,130 seats, cleaning and painting the hall, a new lighting system and lighting instruments, carpeting, a stage extension, signage, state curtains and rigging, new window drapes and follow spot platforms. Don Peterson, an Ishpeming School Board member, will present a certificate of appreciation to Elson prior to the Tamburitzans’ performance scheduled for 8 p.m. Aug. 24. Elson, a lifelong resident of Ishpeming, is retired and the former owner of the Elson Bottling Works of Marquette and Ishpeming.

ISHPEMING — A picture of Miss Ishpeming, who will reign over the 17th annual Logging Congress, will appear on the cover of the October issue of the Timber Producer, the monthly publication of the Timber Producers Association of Wisconsin and Michigan. The announcement was made today by D.J. Massoglia, Calumet, secretary of the association and editor of the magazine. As Miss Ishpeming, the young lady chosen not only will be a part of the Congress, but will represent the city in Miss Upper Peninsula competition next spring in Marquette. The winner of the title also will take part in the Miss Michigan competition, and will be vying for a number of valuable scholarships in that contest. While Robert Sturm, chairman of the Miss Ishpeming pageant, is on vacation this week, nominations of candidates may be made by contacting the office of the Greater Ishpeming Chamber of Commerce. Service clubs, civic groups, and high school organizations, as well as individuals, have been urged to take part in the nomination of candidates. The local contestants will be judged on appearance in street wear and in bathing suits, and on personality and talent.

Starting at $3.23/week.
