CRYSTAL FALLS — Wendy Stanek of Crystal Falls is among 10 national winners to receive $10,000 each for successful efforts to improve American’s justice system. The Foundation for Improvement of Justice Inc. of Atlanta, Ga. Said that Stanek’s work led to the arrests of more than 20 people in the Iron County area. Stanek, a mother of six who was convinced that her son’s death in a 1988 wreck involved illegal drugs, voluntarily went undercover for a year to investigate local drug activity. Working often without police protection, she made numerous drug buys, many from friends and acquaintances she found involved in the drug culture, and today she remains courageous in the face of anonymous threats since her identity was revealed in court, according to the foundation.
