MARQUETTE — David Arnold, a seventh grader at Graveraet Middle School, was cited at the Midwest Talent Search Award ceremonies at Northwestern University in Chicago. Arnold, the son of Constance and Donald Arnold of Lakewood Lane, Marquette, received the third place medal for gifted seventh graders in the American College Testing Service Mathematics exam. His combined score was at the 97th percentile. This was the second medal in a row for Arnold, who placed second for sixth graders last year. He was also part of the Graveraet team that placed first in the Upper Peninsula in the 1992 Math Counts Competition, a nationwide junior high math program.

IRON RIVER — Ishpeming-Negaunee area horseshoe pitchers took a lot of honors home with them from the Upper Peninsula championship even held at the Iron County Fair. Although the top men’s crown escaped them, ‘shoers from Marquette County won titles in three of the other four divisions. The U.P. championship was won by Albert Christian, Iron River, who defeated Kenneth Maki, Ishpeming, 50-45, in the finals, held in a drizzling rain. Third place was taken by William Maki, National Mine, who had lost to Kenneth Maki, 50-37, in the semi-finals. Winners in other classes of the Peninsula tournament included: Class B- James Kippola, Ishpeming, champion; Eugene Larson, Negaunee, runner-up. Class C- Donald Maki, National Mine, champion; Lawrence Barry, Ishpeming, runner-up. Junior Boys-Dennis Carlson, Ishpeming, champion. In Class D, the championship was taken by John Greenlund, Iron River, from Charles Skully, Sault Ste. Marie.
