HOUGHTON — Gov. John Engler sees no basis for conducting an inquiry into the Michigan Tech Board of Control. According to the governor’s U.P. aide, Dave Svanda, the governor sees “no justifiable reason for an inquiry” at this time. State Rep. Stephen Dresch requested that Engler exercise his constitutional authority to make an inquiry into the board’s conduct. Dresch, R-Hancock, said in his letter of request to the governor, “Whether or not the current or former university officers and board of control members personally benefitted from illegal and/or unethical acts…can only be determined through further investigation and adjudication.”

SAULT STE. MARIE — James W. Troyer has addressed the following statement to the Sault Evening News: “In your Tuesday’s issue you made a statement that I said there was 1,000 makers of moon in the city. I want you to make a public retraction of that statement at once or the Evening News will have a libel suit on their hands Monday morning. I never made any such statement and will wager $1,000 against $100 and prove it by every one in the commission room.” The News took a poll of the commissioners. Mayor Andrew J. Short, Joseph Matlas, Ralph Eckardt, George Laundy, and Charles all declared that Troyer made the statement, but several of the commissioners stated, “He probably didn’t mean anything by it.”
