MARQUETTE — Marquette’s fire department battled a blaze at the corner of Van Evera Ave. and Clark St. yesterday afternoon for over an hour. Fire Chief John W. Myers said the blaze broke out in some brush, stumps, and logs, in an area where the land was being clears by a private group. No permit for burning had been obtained, Chief Myers said, and he cautioned residents starting outdoor fires to first obtain a burning permit from the fire department. With the dry conditions existing, due to lake of rainfall, the burning permit is especially important, he noted. City firemen were summoned at 4:01 p.m. and remained at the scene until 5:14 p.m. In all, seven firemen fought the blaze, using the booster hoses off the Nos. 3 (1,000-gallon) and a (500-gallong) pumpers. An area about 50 feet square was burned over. The alarm was received by the fire department by phone.
