ISHPEMING — The NICE Community School Board decided against a land transfer Monday that would have changed boundaries between its district and the Negaunee School District. The NICE board originally proposed to transfer land near County Road 510 to the Negaunee district. That would have allowed students in the area to attend Negaunee schools. Currently, about a half-dozen students just north of the Negaunee district must be bused through Negaunee and Ishpeming to the NICE district, said Superintendent William Hyry. Hyry said the NICE board changed its mind because the Negaunee board and some parents opposed the transfer. Negaunee Superintendent Don Mourand said the school district is unable to provide transportation and cannot afford a new bus for the students.
