NEGAUNEE — Katie Marie Juchemich, 14, of Negaunee accepted a speech award from the Veterans of Foreign Wars District 14 Commander Larry Dillman and District 14 President Marlene Maki. Juckemich, who will be a sophomore this fall at the Negaunee High School, won first place in local and district speech competitions, and received a certificate of merit for participating in state competition that was held recently in Troy, Mich. Juchemich’s entry in the Department of Michigan VFW and Auxiliary Middle School Speech Contest was entitled: “Can I Make a Difference?” She is now eligible to compete for the Democracy Scholarship.

ISHPEMING — A bid for federal aid to help extend the city’s sewage system has been authorized by the Ishpeming city council. The council, at its July meeting, authorized City Manager Thomas R. McNabb to write to Congressman John B. Bennett to ask about the possibility of getting funds under the new public works bill intended to boost the economy in depressed areas. The city has permits to build sewer lines to the south areas, which include the Junction, Lake Angeline, Salisbury and Frenchtown locations. McNabb said that in three surveys made by the city, less than 50 percent of the property owners in the south said they wanted sewers. (They were asked to each pay $250.) Councilman Emil Aho disputed the idea that the south area residents were not in favor of having sewers. He noted that in the sewer bond election, they voted in favor of the issue
