NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee City Band will perform the premiere of a march written by a Marquette businessman tonight. “Superiorland March” was written this winter by Eino Olander, owner of the Washington Shoe Store in Marquette. “It will be the first time Olander has heard it played,” said John Violetta, assistant band director. Olander, a former music teacher, will direct the march. The band director is Keith Lawson. Other selections this week include works by Irving Berlin, excerpts from the opera “Die Meister Singer,” and the show tune “Fantasticks.” Each performance ends with music by John Philip Sousa, and this week’s selection is “The Black Horse Troop.”

MARQUETTE — Over 50 Explorer Scouts from the central U.P. attended the first Lake Superior Rendezvous, held in Marquette Saturday. Competitions were held in canoe racing, canoe tilting, a compass hike, water slalom skiing, and small boat paddle races. A highlight of the day’s activities was a sailing trip aboard the yacht, “Yankee Girl,” with the Scouts being guests of Lincoln B. Frazier, Marquette. Announcement of event winners was held with a campfire program on the beach at Presque Isle Park and concluded with a dance held at the Presque Isle Pavillion. Mariner Girl Scouts and Senior Girl Scouts were guests at the dance. Co-chairmen Fran Summersett, mate of Ship 303, and Ernest Abel, Post 309, expressed pleasure over the success of the event.
