ISHPEMING — The extension of Lakeshore Drive across U.S 41 will happen this summer if the proposal gets the final nod tonight from the city council. “(The project) will go out for bids in July (if approved),” Acting City Manager John Korhonen said this morning. Korhonen said the extension, which will allow access to several businesses, will cost $270,000. Ishpeming would pay $70,000 with the rest of the bill paid by a Michigan Department of Transportation Economic Development Fund grant. Once the intersection is completed, MDOT will do a study to see if the blinking traffic light should be replaced by a stoplight. Korhonen said a stoplight is needed for safety reasons.

MARQUETTE — A Marquette man has been elected commander of the American Legion, in the Upper Peninsula, and Marquette also has been chosen to host the 1963 Legion convention. Both actions climaxed the 42nd U.P. Legion convention in Iron River. Election of officers and selection of the 1963 convention site yesterday capped the four-day meeting. Robert C. Alexander, Immediate past of Post 44, Marquette, was named to head the U.P. Legion Association for the coming year. The U.P. chief has been active in Legion affairs for many years. He was a commander of Post 44 the past year, relinquishing that position to Joseph Fine last week. Alexander operates a retail grocery, gift and tourist supplies business in Marquette.
