MARQUETTE — What looked like a large increase in Great Lakes lamprey control funding for 1993 could be trimmed significantly. A U.S. House subcommittee is considering reducing President George Bush’s $8.76 million 1993 fiscal year budget recommendation down to $7.62 million, said Mark Ruge, aide to U.S. Rep. Bob Davis. The 1992 funding is at $6.4 million. “The subcommittee’s total allocation is down to last year’s level plus an additional 2 percent (reduction),” Ruge said. “(Davis) has organized a coalition of about 200 groups and organizations to fight the reduction.” The House Appropriations Subcommittee for the State Department is expected to make its recommendation to the full House within two weeks. The recommendation will be included in a large package of funding bills, Ruge said, and the House usually approves the package as it stands. The funds are routed through the Great Lakes Fisheries Commission, which had requested $12.3 million in fiscal year 1993 for lamprey control.

MARQUETTE — Stressing the need for a revival of the “fervent patriotism that won our freedom,” Leo M. Enright, exalted ruler of the Marquette Lodge 403, today called attention to a community-wide Flag Day celebration slated for this Thursday. He said the Elks observance honoring the flag marks the 185th anniversary of its adoption by the Continental Congress in 1777. The event will be held at Memorial Field. Enright invited residents, not only of Marquette but also of adjacent areas, to participate in the “Salute to the Flag” observance. He also urged that the flag be displayed before every home and place of business this Thursday, Flag Day 1962. “Habits of apathy and complacency weaken the spirit of patriotism,” the Elks’ leader said. “The fervent patriotism that won our freedom is the only thing that will preserve it.”
