MARQUETTE — It was no ordinary day in the woods. For a dozen members of the Northwoods Trailblazers Saturday, communing with Mother Nature meant ridding her if numerous old household appliances, furniture, car parts and even a dead dog. The recreational organization, working with the state Department of Natural Resources and Benson Forest Products, spent much of the day cleaning up an illegal dump off Honor Camp Access Road in Marquette County’s Sands Township. The land is owned by Benson Forest Products. And by the time the trailblazers were done, they’d filled 14 pickup trucks and six trailers with junk that would be hauled to the Sands Township transfer station. From there it will go to the Marquette County Landfill where most of it will be recycled. “A lot of this comes from the people in the area,” said Ron Coron, a group member. “With all the dump sites closing, people figure they have to pay money to dispose of it when in fact, any steel can be dumped for free at any of the transfer stations.” That includes household appliances.
