MARQUETTE — The Marquette County Board asked the Marquette County Solid Waste Authority to keep its resource recovery coordinator rather than cut the position to trim expenses. The management authority is considering cutting the $26,500-a-year position, held by Lucille Scotti, to trim expenses to prevent another tipping fee hike at the landfill. But county board members said cutting the position would be short sighted, resulting in a long-term loss. “The position has been effective in moving the townships ahead (in recycling) and we should continue,” said Commissioner Greg Seppanen. Mike Etelamaki, director of the authority, attended the county board meeting and addressed the commissioners concerns. He said the authority agrees that recycling is necessary, but philosophically, there is a conflict of interest. “We depend on the tonnage out there to pay our bills,” he said. Six Marquette residents spoke during public comment voicing their support of maintaining Scotti’s position.

MARQUETTE — Michigan’s Gov. John B. Swainson has been forced to cancel visits to Marquette and other Upper Peninsula communities, which had been scheduled for this week. In making the announcement this morning, Thomas F. Jernstad, Marquette, area coordinator for Swainson’s campaign in Upper Michigan, stated: “When plans were made for the Governor’s tour of the U.P., it was not anticipated that the legislature would be in its seventh week of overtime session, as it is now. Appropriations bills are in both houses, and tax measures will get to the Senate tonight or tomorrow.

“Because of the critical nature of these Legislative deliberations and their importance in the Governor’s program to meet in the needs of the people. It is mostly urgent that he be present in Lansing.”

Starting at $3.23/week.
