K.I. SAWYER — One of the last vestiges of the Cold War ceased to exit this morning. The Strategic Air Command was deactivated at Sawyer Air Force Base in a brief ceremony at the Upper Peninsula Retreat Center on base. “History is being made today,” said Col. John Frisby, commander of the 410th Wing. But, “while we have survived the Cold War, the world remains a dangerous place.” At Sawyer and other SAC bases worldwide, units were replacing the old SAC emblem, a mailed fish clutching a lightning bolt, with the newer, more demure insignia of the Air Combat Command. The Tactical Air Command was also phased out, many of its units were transferred to the Air Mobile Command. “We’ll be reducing the force by 25 percent between now and 1995,” Frisby said. “The Cold War is over.” Aside from the internal organizational changes, Sawyer will not change a great deal, he said. “We’ll still be doing the training missions and continuing with business as usual,” Frisby said. “There will be negligible impact on personnel and operations.”

MARQUETTE — Details on how to organize a 4-H automotive project, which Melvin N. Nyquist, county extension agent, says is growing steadily throughout the state, may be obtained at the courthouse. Nyquist announced today that 4-H members interested in the relatively new project, which now has enrollments in 32 counties, may contact his office either by personal call at the court house or by phone. “The 4-H automotive program seeks to develop correct driving attitudes among teenagers,” Nyquist said. “That’s very important because teenagers make up only seven per cent of the total driving force, yet they account for about 12 per cent of all highway mishaps.” At club meetings, members study the automobile and how it works. They also participate in such club activities as skill driving contests, economy runs and hazard hunts. Many local residents serve as resource persons.
