Negaunee band concert detailed

NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee City Band Concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center on the east end of Iron Street and it is loaded with dance numbers.

Director Lucas Wickstrom has chosen “Let’s Dance” as the theme of the evening.

The tango is featured in Leroy Anderson’s “The Girl in Satin” and “Blue Tango” as well as Glenn Osser’s “Tango for Band.” Osser, born and raised in Munising, was well known as an American musician, musical arranger, orchestra leader, and songwriter.

“Court Festival” is a suite in the style of instrumental dance music from the 16th and 17th centuries, while “Albanian Dance” is lively, festive, and high-energy. “American Barndance” begins on a calm note but gradually builds up to an exciting conclusion with plenty of percussion involved.

Musical theater is a part of the concert with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s early musical, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” which has a variety of songs and styles that the audience will recognize.

The concert also includes two marches, “On the Square,” a classic that’s been a favorite of bands for almost a century, as well as the Italian “A Santa Cecilia March,” with a slower tempo than typical marches.

As usual, the concert will conclude with “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”
