MARQUETTE — Teams from Marquette Public Schools participated in the Odyssey of the Mind Region IX competition at Michigan Tech University Feb. 29. Students from Vandenboom Elementary, including Scott LaFave, Scott Schultz, Brad Alto, Matt Himes, David Scott and David Sommers, earned a gold medal for a problem called “Hybrid Relays.” Sandy Knoll Elementary came in second. In Division II, Graveraet Middle School took a silver medal for the problem “Monument and Atlas.” Bothwell Middle School placed second. Odyssey of the Mind is a program that encourages creativity and problem solving and has participants from the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. First- and second-place medal winning teams are eligible to participate in the Michigan State Odyssey of the Mind Competition at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant on April 25.

NEGAUNEE — 10 entries in six categories were selected yesterday to represent Negaunee High School in the district forensic meet to be held here March 23. A total of 25 speech students participated in the program. Pupils qualifying for the district meet and the categories in which they will compete: Declamation: Mariane Akel, Diane Collins; Dramatic Monologue: Patricia Holman, Richard Jensen, Susan Richards; Dramatic Dialogue: Shirley Johnson, Marilyn Pascoe; Original Oratory: Stephen Adamini; Humorous Declamation — Gary Bath; Extemporaneous Speech: Albert Sundine. Judges for the preliminary contest were faculty members, Mrs. Olga Williams, Miss Berlyene Miller and Miss Dorothy Miller. Presentations were rated by a student evaluation board. Winners in the contest were Toni Galetto, first; and Isabelle Rubatt and Robert Gerndt, tied for second and third.
