NEGAUNEE — Negaunee City Manager John Korhonen and councilman Paul Gravedoni each had a chance to tell their side of the story Tuesday night regarding the recent controversy over the city police chief’s salary. Marquette attorney John Hammang met with both men, along with Mayor Steven Perucco, in closed session as part of the investigation into allegations made by Gravedoni in September that Police Chief Paul Waters was being overpaid. The overpayment is Korhonen’s fault, Gravedoni claims. Hammang was asked by the city council to investigate the allegations. He said he will present his opinion on the issue at the council’s Dec. 12 meeting. So far, he has spent 25 hours on the case.

MARQUETTE — The roster of unemployed persons in Marquette was increased to 200 by Wednesday’s registrations in the Chamber of Commerce office. Registration was started here Tuesday and the first day of brought in 70 names, with 130 added on Tuesday. It is hoped that the Marquette registration will be practically completed by Saturday night so that the questionnaires may be forwarded to the classification commission. It is expected that the registration today will be much heavier than it was the first two days and by tomorrow night, it is believed, the names of most of Marquette’s jobless residents will be on file. P.B Spear, chairman of the county unemployment commission’s executive committee, said yesterday, “It should be distinctly understood that when jobs are available they will not be given to persons whose names are not registered. The registration is the foundation upon which we hope to build up effective relief of unemployment. Every man and women who needs and wants a job should not let another day go by without registering.”
