Marquette Choral Society seeks new members

Rehearsals to begin Aug. 23

MARQUETTE — As the choir enters its 50th year of music-making, the Marquette Choral Society is actively seeking new members of all voice parts.

Despite concert cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Marquette Choral Society remained active throughout the 2020-2021 season with virtual rehearsals and lectures on choral literature, given by musical director Dr. Erin Colwitz and other guest speakers. The choir also partnered with Public Radio 90 to hold a “Sing-Along Messiah” event in December, which had 90 participants.

The ensemble is looking forward to returning to in-person singing, performance and fellowship this fall with long-time and new members alike, organizers said.

The repertoire for fall 2021 will include Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Mass in G Minor and John Rutter’s Gloria, with concerts taking place on Dec. 11 and 12 at St. Peter Cathedral.

Rehearsals will be on Monday evenings from 7-9:30 p.m. in room 250 at the Thomas Fine Arts on the Northern Michigan University campus, beginning on Aug. 23.

Dues for the fall 2021 season will be $30, with an additional $30 for the cost of sheet music.

Registration will take place at 6 p.m. prior to the first rehearsal, and additionally at 6:30 p.m. before the second and third rehearsals.

All singers with a love of choral music are welcome to join, organizers said.

At this time, masks will be required in rehearsal, in accordance with Northern Michigan University policy. Organizers recommend that singers purchase a Resonance Singers Mask from MyMusicFolders at www.mymusicfolders.com/product/resonance-singers-mask-with-disposable-biofilters/.

Singers are also strongly encouraged to be vaccinated for COVID-19, also in accordance with university policy, as the university will not lift pandemic restrictions until there is a high percentage of the on-campus population vaccinated, organizers said.

The Marquette Choral Society is a mixed-voice adult choir comprising approximately 100 singers who come from a four-county region in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

MCS strives to engage, enrich, and inspire our region through the art of choral music, according to organizers.

The ensemble was founded in 1971 by Dr. William Dehning and is currently led by musical director Dr. Erin Colwitz. For more information, visit www.marquettechoralsociety.org or email choralsociety906@gmail.com.
