MARQUETTE — The Marquette “Noon Hour” Kiwanis honored three Marquette Area Public School teachers: Lucia Harrington, 2nd Grade, Whitman School; Cheryl Gustafson, Life Skills, Bothwell Middle School; and Nancy Peterson, French, Marquette Senior High School. Recognition of one teacher from each level — elementary, middle, and high school — is given to those teachers who demonstrate outstanding effort above and beyond expected duties. The program is in addition to the Michigan State Board of Education Teacher of the Year. The MAPS Teacher of the Year is not considered for this award. Nominations come from fellow teachers. The honorees were awarded an individual plaque, honored during a ceremony at a Kiwanis meeting, and a traveling plaque, with name plates, for each level.

MARQUETTE — Area outboard racers will break the ice (figuratively speaking, we trust) with an eight-class regatta off Presque Isle, Sunday, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Racing is planned in all classes, including A. B and C-D-F Utilities and Hydroplanes, and the UPNWORA champions of 1960 are expected to be on hand for the events which will include free-for-all races. In this group is Dave Shaughnessy of Ironwood, “D” Hydro champ last year, whose craft is capable of 75 to 80 miles per hour. Bill Cloon, Jr., also of Ironwood, is defending champ in the C-D-F Utilities and in the Hydro Free-For-All, is expected as is Denny Terzinski of Rhinelander, Wis., B Utility and B Hydro champ. Bill Gustafson of Wakefield is the A Hydro champion. Ken Kulvinen of Marquette, A Utility Class champ in 1960, is organizing the program along with Howard Fregeole of Marquette, who competed in the nationals last year. Richards Sports Shop of Marquette is donating trophies for the local regatta.
