MARQUETTE — Cancer specialist Dr. Jaya Soni recently joined the medical staff of Marquette General Hospital. Soni, a radiation oncologist arrives from a position as Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at the Ellis Fischel State Cancer Center in Columbia, Mo. Radiation oncologists are subspecialists within the more general field of oncology, or cancer medicine. They are highly trained in the use of radioactive materials as agents to treat cancer. Soni has special training in brachytherapy, using radionuclides in close proximity to the tumor. Prior to her position in Missouri, Soni received fellowship training at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Science in Memphis, and completed her residency in radiation oncology at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York. She completed medical school and undergraduate work in her native India. She is married to John Soni, an electrical engineer, and she resides in Marquette.

NEGAUNEE — Sponsored by the Negaunee Rod and Gun Club, a fish derby for children 16 years of age and under, will be held Saturday at Neely’s Pond. All children in the area are invited to participate. President Roland Juchemich announced today that prizes will be given to entries catching the largest fish in various age groups which will be decided Saturday, for the most fish caught for the day, or the limit of fish. Fishing Derby prizes have been donated by the following business concerns in the county: Gibbs Sporting Good, Richards Sporting Goods, Johnson Sporting Goods, Gamble Store, and Montgomery Ward, Marquette; Coast-to-Coast, Jackson Hardware, Eman’s, Bietila’s Sporting Goods, Harry’s Sporting Goods of Ishpeming; Perala Hardware and Symons Hardware of Negaunee. Free hot dogs and pop will be served to children at the Rod and Gun clubhouse during the afternoon. The derby will open at 10 a.m. and continue until 6 p.m.
