Beach hazard statement issued

NEGAUNEE — The National Weather Service in Negaunee Township has issued a beach hazard statement for Marquette and Alger counties that expires at 10 p.m. today.

Dangerous swimming conditions are due to high wave action and strong rip currents, the statement reads. High wave action and dangerous currents will lead to life-threatening swimming conditions, the NWS said, and waves in rapid succession can tire swimmers quickly.

The NWS said that current-related fatalities and rescues in the past have occurred because of similar wave conditions at Little Presque Isle and Middle Bay north of Presque Isle Park in Marquette Township, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the exposed regions of Grand Marais Harbor and the Au Train river mouth in Au Train.

People are advised to remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions.
