NEGAUNEE — When it was time to vote for Marquette County Extension Homemaker of the year, Evelyn Larson didn’t cast a ballot for herself. She was chosen for the award after a vote by the Pioneer Homemakers of Today, an arm of the Michigan State University cooperative Extension Service. A native of Crystal Falls, Larson has been making a home in Negaunee Township with her husband, Wes, for nearly 39 years. The family has grown to include three sons and two grandchildren. “The award is not just for how you keep a home, it’s for what you do for your club, too,” said Larson. “We do things like plant flowers at the Negaunee Township Building and Lake Bancroft, make layettes for the babies at Bell Hospital, and make pajamas for Bay Cliff. I enjoy it.” Karen Palomaki, 1990 Homemaker of the Year, agreed that the club is more than just a clearinghouse for “homemaking tips.” She and Sharon Luokkala, Council President, presented the award to Larson.

MARQUETTE — Workmen have installed a small microphone on the witness stand in the Marquette County Circuit Court room and the amplifier system will be ready during the regular term of circuit court, which begins this week. Robert H. DeRoche, Marquette county controller, said the microphone was installed on the witness stand in an attempt to solve the problem of poor voice carriage in the courtroom.
