AAUW honors Mahn

MARQUETTE — The American Association of University Women of Marquette has named Hannah Mahn as the 2021 Martha Griffiths Award winner.

The Martha Griffiths Award is given annually to a high-achieving graduating Northern Michigan University student and is named in honor of one of Michigan’s most influential women legislators in the last half of the 20th century.

Martha Griffiths was known for her efforts in the Civil Rights Act and for getting the Equal Rights Amendment to the House floor for a vote in 1970.

Nominations were received from six NMU students who will earn and associate or bachelor’s degree in 2021. In addition to being an academically high achiever, the AAUW Board was looking for candidates with high levels of community involvement both on and off campus.

Mahn graduated summa cum laude this month with a double major in German studies and political science with a pre-law concentration and Lower Division honors.

Mahn is co-vice president of Women for Women and a Residence Hall adviser who has supervised student participation in community-wide activities such as the Pride Festival, Women’s Marches and campus-wide voter registration efforts and has led activities to raise awareness of the gender pay gap and sexual assault.

After graduation, Mahn plans to create a safe environment for LGBTQIA+ youth in her hometown, complete a yearlong internship with an Alternate Correctional Facility, and then attend graduate school.

AAUW-Marquette will present Mahn with the official award at its upcoming AAUW program meeting Thursday conducted via Zoom.
