TRIPOLI, Wis. — Despite concerns that mining could hurt tourism and the environment of Northern Wisconsin, some hotel, bar and restaurant owners view it as a boost to sluggish business in the north. Jerry and Sally Hammond, owners of the Sportsland Bar and Motel in Tripoli, said they have been scraping by financially over the past five years until Noranda Minerals came to town. The Toronto-based company sent drilling crews into the wood north of the motel, up near the Willow River in Southern Oneida County. Their 20-man crew stayed at the Sportsland. The Hammonds and other who make a living in northern Wisconsin said mining is a possible solution to northern Wisconsin’s economic blues.
