Woman dies in 2-vehicle crash on Friday

HOUGHTON -- A woman died in a two-vehicle accident that took place Friday morning on U.S. 41 near Airport Park Road, the Houghton County Sheriff's Office said.

The office reported that deputies were dispatched to a personal-injury accident involving two cars with entrapment.

An 81-year-old male from Houghton was driving north on U.S. 41 heading to Calumet when an approached Michigan Department of Transportation snowplow approaching in the southbound lane had create a large cloud of snow dust.

The driver said he slowed down and entered the cloud, and then hit something but was unsure of what it was. The other car involved was driven by a 65-year-old female from Mohawk who was unable to talk at the time due to injury.

A witness behind the southbound vehicle said the woman's car slid sideways on the highway and crossed the center line into the northbound lane.

The vehicles crashed almost head on, causing significant damage to both vehicles.

Due to significant injuries, the Houghton couple was transported to Keweenaw Aspirus Hospital in Laurium where the 79-year-old female passenger died from injuries hours later.

The female driving the other car was transported to UP Health System-Portage and taken into emergency surgery for internal injuries. She has so far been listed in fair condition.

The Houghton County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Calumet Fire Department, first responders, Mercy Ambulance and Superior Service.
