SAWYER AIR FORCE BASE — A Sawyer Air Force Base sergeant has won the SAC Intermediate Enlisted Information Manager of the Year award for 1990. Staff Sgt. James Zeigler of the 410th Comptroller Squadron won the SAC award, which recognizes him as the best at his job. He had to beat out 26 others throughout the command and is now one of eight to meet the Air Force-level board for “Best in the Air Force.” It’s now a waiting game until late February for the results of the Air Force board. Zeigler was hand-picked by the vice wing commander as chief of a “Tiger Team.” They performed a base-wide orderly room pre-inspection visit which led to all orderly rooms meeting or exceeding unit effectiveness inspection standards.

MARQUETTE — Opening of the Olympic Lanes Inc. bowling alley at 124 Main St. was scheduled for this afternoon. Con Lempesis, 811 N. Fourth St., has been named manager of the lanes, Attorney George C. Quinnell, Marquette, a partner in the corporation, announced today. He added that all 10 bowling lanes are ready for use, although the snack bar has not been completed. Modern equipment, Quinnell said, has been installed throughout the alley. A seating area has been provided for spectators, with both chairs and tables. A special feature of the bowling alley is a modern heating system, with electronic plates to take the dust out of the air, and an automatic regulator which puts moisture into the air as required. He stated the snack bar will be completed in the near future and a formal opening will be held at a later date. Partners in Olympic Lanes Inc. are Quinnell, Mrs. Helmi Biekola, Warner H. Biekkola, Arthur L. Hiebel, Marvin G. Jensen, and George E. Johnson, all of Marquette; Wilho J. Marttinen, Mass; Fred Biekkola, L’Anse, and Carl Noreus, Detroit.
