Road commission employee killed in Iron County two-vehicle accident

IRON MOUNTAIN — An Iron County Road Commission employee died in a two-vehicle accident on Wednesday in Bates Township in Iron County.

The Michigan State Police Iron Post said troopers responded to the two-vehicle crash at about 2:14 p.m. on Bates-Amasa Road near Shady Lane. The investigation determined that a 57-year-old male from Newald, Wisconsin, operating a 2005 Ford Ranger pickup, failed to stop in a marked work zone.

He struck a road commission employee performing duties as a flagger, pinning him between the driver’s vehicle and the road commission vehicle next to the employee. The employee suffered fatal injuries at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to Aspirus Hospital in Iron River. He was later airlifted to Wausau, Wisconsin, for further treatment of his injuries.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident. The names of the victim and driver are pending notification of next of kin.

Assisting at the scene were the Iron County Sheriff’s Office, West Iron Fire Department, Aspirus EMS, Iron County Search and Rescue, and Iron County Victim Advocacy Team.
