Sawyer Air Force Base — Sawyer Elementary School is one of 100 elementary schools in the state to participate in the Michigan accreditation program. The Michigan Department of education and the Bureau of Accreditation, working with the school improvement studies at the University of Michigan, are implementing an elementary and junior high/middle accreditation system for statewide use. Selected from more than 300 schools that applied, the Sawyer school will take part in a five-phase study which will include a visit to the school by teacher, administrators and other educators in early 1991. The visiting team, made up of specialists in elementary school education, will review the school’s self-study. Early next fall, the school’s faculty will review various indicators to demonstrate growth. Possible indicators are standardized test results, school attendance rates, school climate, and community involvement.
