Making downtown bright: Winners of MDDA holiday lighting and decorating contest announced

MARQUETTE -- The Marquette Downtown Development Authority has announced the winners in its Light Up Downtown Marquette holiday lighting and decorating contest.
More than 20 downtown businesses participated in the contest, competing in five different categories. The categories were Best Light Display, Best Traditional Display, Community's Choice, Most Unique or Unusual Display and the Best Overall Holiday Display.
DIGS Gastropub along West Washington Street claimed victory in two categories, Best Overall Holiday Display and Community's Choice.
The MDDA says it received 768 votes during the 15-day voting period, with 68% of the vote going to DIGS.
Two other Washington Street businesses were also announced as winners.
The Fire Station was victorious in the Best Light Display Category while Best Traditional Display went to Richardson Jewelers.
The Most Unique or Unusual Display went to Madgoodies Studio on West Ohio Street.
"We're so very happy to have this many Downtown Marquette businesses compete in this fun and festive competition," said Tara Laase-McKinney, promotions and events coordinator for MDDA. "So many businesses went all-out with their decorations, and it's really impressive. With so many negative things happening this year, it's really wonderful to help bring cheer to our community."
As the winner of the Best Overall Holiday Display, DIGS will receive a $1,000 advertising voucher from the MDDA and WLUC-TV6.
Other winning businesses will receive trophies and of course, bragging rights, organizers said.
The displays will remain up through the end of the holiday season, and the MDDA encourages the public to drive or walk downtown and view the displays for themselves.
