ESCANABA — A barrier-free home tour on Oct. 19 and 20 will focus consumer and public awareness on handicapped issues and raise money for the U.P. Community for Independent Living. The community is a non-profit organization based in Escanaba, promoting independent living for persons with disabilities. The group operates a clearinghouse, provides information, referrals, peer support, and public awareness. The tour will be at the Rich and Jane Heinz residence in Gladstone. Admission is $1 per person. The two-year-old, 1700-square-foot home incorporates the “Home for Life” concept, designed to make a home accessible throughout one’s life. The U.P. Community for Independent Living encourages home owners, builders, persons with disabilities, their friends and families, to attend the tour. Handouts on barrier-free design and the community will be available.

NEGAUNEE — “Everyone is invited” to the reception in Marquette on Sunday, Oct. 30, for Eunice Mary Shriver, sister of Sen. John F. Kennedy, Democratic presidential candidate, it was emphasized today. Mrs. Robert C. McCarthy, Marquette, chairman of the committee on arrangements for the reception for Mrs. Shriver, said there was some misunderstanding as to circumstances of the visit by Sen. Kennedy’s sister. “This will be a public reception and everyone is welcome,” Mrs. McCarthy said today. No invitations will be sent out, she said, but announcements will be sent to public officials. A committee of 50 women from the district are working on arrangements for the reception. The senator’s sister, wife of Robert Sargent Shriver, Chicago, will speak at the event. She is the eldest sister of the nominee, and has been named official hostess during Sen. Kennedy’s campaign, because the senator’s wife, Jacqueline, is pregnant and is unable to undertake the arduous task of being hostess. The reception will be held in the National Guard Armory in Marquette at 8 that night. Earlier that day she will visit in Sault Ste. Marie.
