MANISTIQUE — A 52-year-old Manistique resident was killed in a motorcycle accident in Hiawatha Township in Schoolcraft County on Saturday, according to the Michigan State Police Manistique Outpost.

At about 9 p.m. Saturday, Markie Sumter was traveling northbound on State Road near M-94 when the driver lost control, leaving the roadway, MSP said. The driver then struck a tree and succumbed to his injuries on the scene.

Sumter was not wearing a helmet, and alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the crash.

The accident was investigated by MSP Manistique Outpost troopers and MSP Gladstone Post personnel. Manistique EMS and Hiawatha Township Fire also assisted with the accident.
