Straw bale gardening taught

MARQUETTE — Join the Peter White Public Library on a field trip with Sarah Bixby to learn about Straw Bale Gardening from 1-2:30 p.m. July 14.

Straw bale gardening, Joel Karsten’s revolutionary approach to gardening, is a straightforward science, easy on the environment and your wallet. In a few easy, inexpensive steps, you will have a few bales in your yard and kale in your bale by fall.

During this walking tour, we will take a look at two straw bale garden plots in Marquette. Gardening tips will include information on vigilance of bales in the first year; placement of plants and beautifying bales; and talking points to win your neighbors over to straw bales. Information will also include tips on where to place your compost heap at home and how to make that heap give and give to your garden.

Registration is required for this field trip. To reserve your spot, email Carolyn at cmcmanis@uproc.lib.mi.us or call 906-226-4318. A rain date is set for July 15 from 1-2:30 p.m. For more information, check out the events calendar at www.pwpl.info.
