Search for lost hiker continues

IRONWOOD — A search continued for a lost hiker in the Rainbow Falls/Black River Harbor area Ironwood Township.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office said that on Saturday evening, Stephanie Narvaez, 22, of Watertown, Wisconsin, and a companion, Karl Nelson, 22, of Milwaukee were hiking near Rainbow Falls when she attempted to cross the Black River just above the waterfalls.

Narvaez slipped into the river and was carried over the falls. Initial attempts by Nelson to rescue her failed.

The Michigan State Police Dive Team was unsuccessful in locating the victim after conducting underwater searches in and around the falls late into Sunday evening. Those efforts were hampered by dangerous currents and treacherous underwater terrain.

Gogebic County deputies as well as search and rescue team members were on the scene as of Monday morning continuing the search.

Assisting sheriff’s deputies in the search operation were the Michigan State Police, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Forest Service personnel, the Gogebic County Search and Rescue Team, and Beacon Ambulance.

The area in and around Rainbow Falls remained closed.
