Fatal motorcycle crash on U.S. 2

NAUBINWAY — The Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal vehicle-motorcycle accident that occurred Saturday in Garfield Township.

Darrin Christopher Thomas, 43, of Baldwin, Michigan attempted to pass a slower-moving camper trailer while he was traveling eastbound along U.S. 2 on a motorcycle but he struck an oncoming pickup truck in the westbound lane, police said.

Thomas, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, was confirmed dead at the scene, according to police. No injuries were sustained by any of the four occupants of the pickup truck. Alcohol and speed were not contributing factors in the crash, officials said.

Further investigation revealed that Thomas may not have acquired his Michigan cycle endorsement, which is required to legally ride a motorcycle on state roadways, the release states.

Sheriff’s deputies were assisted by the Garfield Township Fire and EMS, the Michigan Department of Transportation, the Michigan State Police Sault Ste Marie Post, and Michigan State Police Accident Reconstruction of Marquette.
