Camper conundrum

City of Negaunee begins to enforce ordinance

NEGAUNEE — The city of Negaunee has begun enforcing an ordinance meant to prevent the parking of campers and motor homes on city streets.

Negaunee City Manager Nate Heffron announced that the city police department began to enforce the ordinance, which states in part: “No person shall, within the limits of the City, park any trailer on any street, alley or highway or other public way or public place,” on Monday.

NPD began issuing notices to the owners of camper trailers or motor homes who have parked them in the street that they are in violation of the ordinance, a press release from the city of Negaunee states.

“Owners will be given until noon on July 31, 2020, to remove their camper trailer/motorhome from the city street or face a possible citation no(t) more than $500,” the release states.

According to city officials more campers and motor homes have been purchased and parked on the streets of Negaunee.

“Many complaints have been coming into the city and council this year,” Heffron said. “We are appropriately utilizing our tools where necessary in the interest of public health, safety and welfare.”

The city has made contact with a business with space to park the vehicles, Heffron said.

“The city does not endorse or suggest any vendor, nor is the city directly involved with any contracts or services they may provide,” Heffron said, “nor can we answer any questions related to their services.”

Residents who have questions about the notices are requested to contact the Negaunee City Police Department at 906-475-4154.
