Body recovered from Black River

BESSEMER — The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office announced that deputies recovered the body of Stephanie Narvaez, 22, of Watertown, Wisconsin, at about 4:40 a.m. Tuesday at the base of Rainbow Falls in Ironwood Township.

Narvaez and a companion, Karl Nelson, 22, of Milwaukee, were hiking above the falls last Saturday evening when she attempted to cross the Black River, slipping into the water and carried over the falls.

Initial rescue attempts were unsuccessful. Recovery operations were ongoing by search personnel.

Assisting in the search were the Gogebic County Search and Rescue Team, Michigan State Police Wakefield Post, Michigan State Police Dive Team, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Forest Service, Beacon Ambulance, Ironwood Township Fire and the Gogebic County Victim Services Unit.
