MARQUETTE– Marquette’s first annual Gala Arts Event, held in the Great Lakes Rooms of the Don H. Bottum University Center on the campus of Northern Michigan University, is being called a success. The evening started with a reception at the Lee Hall Gallery for the LSAA, Inc.-members art show. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of Arts Enhancer Awards given to businesses or people who have built a reputation for supporting the arts. Recipients were Dr. Harold Wright, Jayne Hiebel, and Public Radio 90. Wright was honored for his work in all areas of the arts, especially music; Jayne Hiebel has been active in supporting the arts in the U.P. for 50 years; Public Radio 90 was honored for its continuous effort to promote the arts. The gala was fundraiser to support the Marquette-Alger Arts Coalition Cultural Survey.

60 years ago

ISHPEMING — Two Ishpeming men have been named to important posts in the Society of Mining Engineers of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. Raymond D. Satterley, general manager, ore mines, Inland Steel Co., who is a member of the society’s board of directors, has been appointed to its editorial board. Hugh J. Leach, manager of Michigan Mines for the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., has been named to the executive committee of the society’s mining and exploration division and to chairmanship of the division’s open pit mining committee. The society is the professional organization of engineers and geologists in the minerals industries.
