Forest Road 2001 work planned

AUTRAIN — Starting in July, road clearing, widening and stump removal will be taking place along Forest Road 2001, also known as Highbanks Road, which leads to a popular day use area and campsites along the AuTrain River, the U.S. Forest Service said.

For the safety of the public and equipment operators, a temporary gate will be placed at the entrance of Forest Road 2001, which will prevent vehicle access to the Highbanks area and campsites. The three campsites will remain open on a first-come/first-served basis throughout the summer but will be accessible only by canoe or kayak.

Analysis for the project was completed in 2018. The public is to expect improvements in this area over the next few years.

The USFS recommends people not approach heavy equipment and follow all safety signing. They also are not to enter areas posted as closed or areas where heavy equipment can be seen or heard.
