Negaunee updates event permit policy due to COVID-19

NEGAUNEE — Negaunee city officials are requesting feedback from local event organizers to learn how they plan to move forward in light of public COVID-19 concerns.

In a press release issued Monday, officials said they are taking “proactive measures to assess the risk that COVID-19 may place on staff and the public at-large.”

Effective immediately, the city will temporarily halt the issuance of new permits for events, parades or other use of public spaces while the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order is in place, a memo sent to all known community events and organizations states.

“Consistent with the governor’s most recent stay at home order 20-77, all activities necessary to sustain and protect life within the city have been temporarily suspended and all events occurring within any city of Negaunee buildings have been canceled,” the memo states.

The city is asking organizations that have already planned public events to consider how their event might change in light of COVID-19.

“The city is also looking for an indication from your group as to whether you intend to cancel your event, modify it to comply with the governor’s orders and/or whether you have established a date to make a formal decision as to cancelation, postponement or modification,” the memo states.

Organizers are being asked to contact city manager Nate Heffron with questions or for updates about their individual events.

City officials expressed gratitude toward event organizers for their continued dedication to the city.

“Events and gatherings such as these are an integral part of our city’s fabric and a major reason Negaunee is such a great place. We thank all of these organizations for their time and effort year after year,” the release states.
