Ishpeming Senior Center funding

Council to consider resolutions

ISHPEMING — The Ishpeming City Council will consider resolutions related to its $2.2 million Senior Center project during a virtual meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The city was awarded $1.9 million in Community Development Block Grant funds to demolish the former facility at 320 S. Pine St. and replace it with a new multipurpose building at 121 Greenwood St.

One proposed resolution would authorize City Manager Craig Cugini to to sign any further documentation that may be required by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the administrator of the CDBG grant. The proposed resolution also authorizes Finance Director James Lampman to sign payment requests related to the project.

The second proposed resolution designates Cugini as the certifying officer for the environmental process for the project.

The Senior Center operations have taken place in a leased space on the lower level of Phelps Square since October, after the former city-owned facility at 320 S. Pine St. was condemned by the Marquette County Building Codes Department following an inspection required as part of the CDBG grant application.

The council will also consider a resolution related to a $250,000 Financially Distressed Cities, Villages and Townships grant, which will be used in conjunction with its water meter and radio reads upgrades project.

In addition, councilors will consider authorization to begin the process to hire a Department of Public Works director and an amendment to the city’s 2020 Fee Schedule.

The agenda also includes requests for limited permanent outdoor service area permission applications for Cognition Brewing Company and Shelly’s Rainbow Bar.

The meeting will be available to view on Channel 189. Public participation will still be available via video/phone conferencing or written comments.

The meeting will be held via the Zoom teleconferencing platform. For information on how to participate or to submit a public comment in writing contact City Clerk Cathy Smith at cathysmith@ishpemingcity.org or 906-485-1091 ext. 203.
