Flash your badge: Effort offers UPHS employees masks for personal use

MARQUETTE — The Masks for Marquette volunteer effort continues to get thousands of masks into the hands of essential workers.

Masks for Marquette organizer Sally Steen is taking her efforts — to get masks in the hands of UP Health Systems-Marquette and UP Health Systems-Bell employees — to the streets Saturday.

From 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Steen will be on the corner of Seventh and Spring streets in Marquette to provide one protective cloth face mask per UPHS staff member who comes by and flashes their badge.

The idea came to her after Steen realized that employees from both hospitals may not have masks that they can take home.

“Because they are hard to find, we wanted to give one, at least, to each health care worker so they can go grocery shopping or get gas, or pick up their kids or whatever they might need it for,” Steen said. “Our main focus has always been to help them, to keep them safe and keep our community safe.”

She noted that the Marquette Police Department has been contacted regarding Saturday’s activity.
