Chase ends with arrest in Mackinac

MACKINAC COUNTY — A child suffered minor injuries and a man was jailed upon multiple charges after the man allegedly fled the scene of a domestic violence incident in Mackinac County with the child and led police on a chase across the Mackinac Bridge.

Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the report of domestic violence around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to a press release from the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office. It was reported a male suspect had fled the scene in a vehicle and had taken a child with him. Sheriff’s deputies located the vehicle traveling east on U.S. 2 near Hog Island Road. Deputies tried to initiate a traffic stop but the suspect failed to pull over.

Deputies pursued the vehicle with speeds reaching 70 mph. As the pursuit reached the St. Ignace area, deputies were assisted by the Michigan State Police, St. Ignace Police Department, Sault Tribal Police Department and Emmet County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect entered the on-ramp to I-75 southbound heading toward the Mackinac Bridge.

While the suspect was on the on-ramp, police deployed spike strips, which “successfully deflated both passenger-side tires,” police said in a press release.

The suspect continued south and drove through the toll plaza, crashing through the toll gate. While on the bridge, the suspect struck several construction pylons.

After crossing the bridge, the vehicle exited onto M-31, continuing south.

Officers attempted to box the vehicle in to prevent it from hitting oncoming traffic. While doing so the suspect struck a patrol vehicle, causing damage to it.

Police again attempted to box in the suspect vehicle and the suspect tried to maneuver out of it and lost control. The vehicle left the roadway and went into the ditch. The suspect vehicle struck an embankment, causing it to roll onto its roof.

Police approached the vehicle and were able to rescue the child from it. The suspect “failed to comply with officer’s orders to come out of the vehicle,” officials said in a press release.

Officers were able to take him into custody after a taser was deployed. The suspect was treated on scene by EMS and was also evaluated at the hospital. He was then lodged at the Mackinac County Jail without incident on multiple charges.

It is believed the suspect was under the influence of drugs. The child had minor injuries and was transported by EMS to the hospital for treatment. No names are being released at this time, police said.
