MARQUETTE — The locally owned Household Appliance and Art Van retailers in Marquette Township are not expected to be affected by the recent acquisition of some Art Van stores by Levin Furniture.
Pittsburgh’s Levin Furniture, acquired in late 2017 by Art Van Furniture LLC of downstate Warren, has returned to its family roots, as Robert Levin came out of retirement to buy the company founded by his grandparents, Sam and Jessie, in 1920, a news release states.
Financials were not disclosed.
According to the Pittsburgh Business Times, Levin reached an agreement late Wednesday to acquire the Pennsylvania and Ohio assets of Levin Furniture and also Wolf Furniture through a court restructuring of Art Van, according to a news release.
Art Van had jointly announced its purchase of both Levin Furniture and Altoona-based Wolf Furniture in November 2017. Both brands were retained.
Levin now owns 35 namesake stores and eight Wolf showrooms.
“I am thrilled to welcome the Pennsylvania Wolf associates to our Levin family and look forward to getting to know them,” Levin said in a prepared statement.
The Detroit Free Press reported on Thursday that the Thomas H. Lee Partners private equity firm had planned to shut down and liquidate its Art Van stores in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Missouri.
Household Finance and Art Van Furniture, which have a presence in Marquette Township, posted the following announcement on Facebook Thursday afternoon:
“With the announcement of Art Van Furniture closing its doors, we want to be very transparent with our loyal customers, friends, family and the community. Household Appliance is here to stay. We will continue business as usual. Yes — there will be a name change for our mattress & furniture gallery, Yes — we have an AMAZING sale coming soon…out with the old, in with the new.
“Yes — we are working very hard at fulfilling all of our orders, Yes — there will be a transition period (we got this) and YES — we are here to stay for many more years to come! Thank you to everyone for your overwhelming support.”
Household Appliance is connected to Art Van Furniture, located at 2873 U.S. 41. Owned by Steve Anderson and Jeff Palomaki, the business is a family-owned and operated franchise store.
Regarding the company purchase, Tammy M. Bonovich, business manager for Household Appliance and Art Van Furniture, said in an email, “It has no effect on Household Appliance at all. We have been around since 1971.
“We will remove the Art Van name and rename our furniture and mattress gallery. We are excited for the transition.”
