Polar Roll race starts

MARQUETTE — The Polar Roll bike race will start at 8 a.m. today on Washington Street between Third and Front streets and continue down Washington Street to Lakeshore Boulevard, proceeding south toward Spring Street.

At Spring Street, the race will enter the multi-use path and proceed south to the Carp River bridge and then head under U.S. 41 to Cliffs Power Road to join the Noquemanon Trail Network South Trails system.

Racers will cross Grove Street by the Marquette Golf Course and Wilson Street west of Econo Foods. From here, the race will proceed along the Iron Ore Heritage Trail and finish in Ishpeming.

Washington Street between Third Street and Lakeshore Boulevard will remain closed until 9 a.m. today. Front will be closed to through traffic between Main and Bluff streets from 5 to 9 a.m. Lakeshore will be closed for a short period of time to allow bike race participants to proceed on their designated route.

Grove and Wilson streets will not be closed for the event, although vehicles could be delayed on Grove and Wilson at the Harlow Lake Farms subdivision. Drivers are encouraged to travel an alternate route. Motorists are advised to be cautious and courteous of bicyclists on Cliffs Power Road and any of the designated street crossings.
