Man charged in shooting

ONTONAGON — An Ontonagon County man has been charged with assault with intent to murder and felony firearm.

The victim alleged the suspect, Cole Wascher, a 24-year-old male from Greenland Township, threatened him with a firearm. When the victim attempted to defend himself, Wascher shot him, a press release from the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post states.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning in Greenland Township. The victim, a 23-year-old male from the village of Ontonagon, was transported to the Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital. He was later transferred to the Aspirus Wausau Hospital, a previous press release from officials stated. Officials said the victim was scheduled for surgery Monday, but they are currently unaware of his state and expect to release more information soon.

Wascher was arraigned today in 98th District Court in Ontonagon County on one count of assault with intent to murder, a felony punishable by imprisonment in the state prison for life or any number of years.

Wascher was also charged with a felony firearm, a felony punishable by imprisonment for two years. Wascher remains lodged in the Ontonagon County Jail on a $200,000 cash/surety.

A probable cause hearing will be held for Wascher at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 24 and a preliminary exam is scheduled at 10 a.m. March.
