Accident leaves 1 dead on M-28

WAKEFIELD — A 75-year-old man died in a fatal accident that took place at about 5:43 p.m. Saturday on M-28 near Jack Spur Road on the Gogebic-Ontonagon county line, Michigan State Police reported.

Philip L. Wirtanen, 75, of Merriweather was pronounced dead at the scene. It is believed his medical condition was a factor in the vehicle collision.

Anthony Beinhorn, 24, of Shakopee, Minnesota, was treated and released for minor injuries from Aspirus Grandview.

Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash. Both vehicles had only one occupant.

Assisting agencies at the scene were the Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office, Beacon EMS, the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office, SONCO South EMS, the Bergland Township Fire Department, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Iron County Dispatch.
