MARQUETTE — Seven men were ordained to the diaconate of the Catholic Diocese of Marquette on Friday at St. Peter Cathedral.

According to the diocese, they will be in Catholic slang terms “permanent deacons,” as this is not a step toward ordination to the priesthood. They will remain deacons throughout their lives. Permanent deacons often are married, as are six of the seven to be ordained.

As permanent deacons, their ministry in the church will be of service, such as visiting the sick or prison ministry.

They also proclaim the Gospel at Mass, baptize, officiate at weddings, and conduct wake and funeral services. They do not celebrate Mass since that is the function of priests and bishops.

Ordained were, along with their answers when asked where they experience Jesus in their daily lives, were:

Berbohm

≤ Jack Bedard, All Saints Catholic Church, Gladstone: “Everywhere in my life: people I work with, friends, the poor and homeless that He sends my way, but especially in people receiving the Eucharist that you just know the Holy Spirit is with them.” His wife is Cindy.

≤ Robert Berbohm, Holy Family Parish, Gladstone: “I experience Jesus at prayer and reading sculpture.” His wife is Karen.

≤ Paul Lochner, St. Louis the King Catholic Church, Harvey: “In prayer, in my wife and children, and in the people I encounter each day.” His wife is Jennifer.

≤ Jeremiah Mason, St. Paul the Apostle Church and Sacred Heart Parish, both of Calumet; Our Lady of Peace Catholic, Ahmeek; Our Lady of the Pines Mission, Copper Harbor; and Holy Redeemer Mission, Eagle Harbor: “I experience Jesus most intimately in my daily life in the Sacraments and in times of prayer, when I can lay my head on his chest like John, the Beloved Disciple, and try to listen to his heart.” He is single.

≤ William McKnight, St. Louis the King Catholic Church, Harvey: “I see the face of Jesus in the faces of parishioners at St. Louis the King. Their selfless love of one another and their community is an inspiration and reflects the love that Christ has for all of us.” His wife is Rachel.

≤ Martin Thompson, Church of the Resurrection, Hancock, and St. Francis of Assisi Mission, Dollar Bay: “Being prepared for the powerful, sublime ways Christ engages my thoughts and draws me to participate in His divine life. I experience Jesus in a manner that confounds and challenges me to think and act less like I want and more as God wills.” His wife is Marta.

≤ Terry Verville, St. Agnes Catholic Church, Iron River; St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Caspan; and Immaculate Conception Church, Watersmeet: “I experience Jesus at daily Mass, and when I am doing the duties as sacristan at our parish.” His wife is Renee.
