UPLC hosts Giving Tuesday event

MARQUETTE — The Upper Peninsula Land Conservancy is announcing a contest for #GivingTuesday this year and the public is invited to vote for their favorite U.P. wildlife by joining “wildlife-inspired teams” with friends, family and coworkers to give online or in-person at participating Marquette storefronts today, a press release states.

Participants in the UPLC Friends of the Forest Fundraiser can join: the “Leafy Greens” team to vote for trees and plant life; the “Bird Lovers” team to show support for “feathered friends”; the “Charismatic Megafauna” team to vote for moose, mountain lions, deer, wolves and others; the “Marsh Fellows” to represent turtles, salamanders and other shoreline-dwelling creatures; or the “Finned Friends” team to vote for fish and other underwater creatures, according to organizers.

“All money raised will go directly to the permanent protection of vital habitats like the Chocolay Bayou Nature Preserve, the Vielmetti-Peters Reserve, and the other 6,000 acres of land that UPLC protects for our community,” UPLC Executive Director Andrea Denham said in an email.

The fundraiser is hosted online at www.mightycause.com/event/Friendsoftheforestup where visitors can donate to the overall fundraiser, or join a team. Participants can also donate in-person at Contrast Coffee.

Donations will be accepted after Giving Tuesday as well, but the contest portion will end today. The winning team will inspire a special event to be announced in January, Denham said.
